Description
We completed this walk whilst staying at Camping Coullemieres, Vermenton, France. Parking on the road is available for everyone just outside the campsite as this is a park area next to the river Cure.
Following the walk along the river North there are information boards explaining the history of the wood collection by the people of Vermenton. From 1546 to 1926 wood was cut in the forests and floated downriver to be collected by the inhabitants of Vermenton. It was then bundled and sent on to Paris for homes to burn for their heating. Eventually a canal was built from here to Paris for the onward journey in place of horse and carts.
The first part has picnic benches and a small swimming area with easy access into the river. The path does narrow and in it will become inaccessible for wheelchairs just before the train bridge. The far end of the walk is accessible by car using the Rle du Port or the Rue du Flottage. You will see here the start of the Canal d’Accolay and many canal boats tied up.
Further access to the river on the other side is via Rue des Grande Moulins and the Parc de Isles
